Free Resources For Cancer Patients

Here are a list of free resources for cancer patients below that I have come across in my adventures and travels through Cancer Land.  I plan to add to the list as I become aware of other opportunities.  It is my hope that this list will be a source of blessing and encouragement to others going through treatment.  If you are aware of other free resources/fun opportunities for cancer patients , please add them in the comments section to this thread on the website. 🙂

Cleaning For A Reason is a nonprofit organization partnering with maid services to offer free professional house cleanings to improve the lives of women undergoing cancer treatment.

When I signed up, a very gracious owner of a maid service (who was volunteering her services in honor of her Mom) cleaned my house four times free of charge while I was going through chemo. It sure was nice to have a sparkling clean house when I was so exhausted and not feeling well.

Our family was selected to participate in a free, one week retreat at a “Little Pink House of Hope” in N.C. in September 2012. The vacation was like a great big hug from the Lord: absolutely FABULOUS!  Here’s the web site: www.littlepink.org

http://www.campkesem.org./

This a a great , free week long overnight summer camp for kids with a parent with cancer (or who has died from cancer). It is held in different states by University students who support it through fund raisers and who run the whole thing. This past year they opened it to kids up to age 16. (The web site I just checked that is linked above says it is up to age 13 so I don’t know if there’s a change so I sent an email to inquire). I believe the application process begins in January for camp next summer–we squeeked in at the last minute before camp started because I heard about it late. Apparently slots fill up fast usually.

This is an awesome camp experience: the Camp Kesem my girls attended in Florida is usually used as a Girl Scout Camp. It had a zip line, rock climbing wall, boating, swimming pool, air conditioned cabins, all sorts of fun activities along with no-pressure sessions where kids could open up about their feelings about cancer if they wanted to and were able to connect with peers with similar experiences. It was a fun and refreshing time for two of my children who participated. Kids are welcome to attend more than one year and the couselors seemed outstanding.

Our kids go through so much right along with us, what a blessing to have an outreach addressed specifically to their needs!

I got a reponse from my email to a Camp Kesem director re: age eligibility I mentioned above . Here it is copied and pasted below:

“No change for next year. You don’t mention which chapter you are part of,
but I can assure you that if your chapter had teen camp this summer, they
will have it next year too.

Camp Kesem was originally created for children ages 6 to 13. Over the past
12 years, as the organization has grown – and as chapters grow, and our
campers grow up – Camp Kesem has added Teen Programs for 14 to 16 year olds.

We are in our third summer of Counselor in Training Programs (17-18yrs olds)
at several chapters too. The CIT program was developed by two teen campers
who wanted a way to bridge the gap from being “camper” to becoming a
“college student leader.” They are both now in college and volunteering as
student leaders to create Camp Kesem for the next generation of campers.”

The “Look Good, Feel Better Program is a “cheerin’ uppin” sort of thing to do during cancer treatment whether you are into wearing makeup under normal circumstances or not IMHO.

http://lookgoodfeelbetter.org/

“Look Good…Feel Better is available free of charge in every state, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. Look Good…Feel Better holds group workshops that teach beauty techniques to female cancer patients to help them combat the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment. Look Good…Feel Better also offers programs for teens, individual consultations in select areas, Spanish language and Spanish/English programs, and a Web site for men undergoing cancer treatment. Since 1989, Look Good…Feel Better has served more than 800,000 women in the United States and is supported by more than 15,000 volunteers.

Group Programs

Group programs are step-by-step makeover learning sessions led by cosmetology professionals using products donated by the cosmetic industry. Each two-hour, hands-on workshop includes a 12-step skin care and makeup lesson, nail care techniques, and professional advice on how to deal with hair loss using wigs, scarves, hats, hairpieces, and other accessories.
Patients at various stages of treatment receive personal attention and take home instruction booklets and complimentary cosmetic kits in shades that match their skin tones. Each year, more than 50,000 individuals participate in small groups of five to 10 that create a sense of support and community.
Group programs are offered nationwide in comprehensive cancer centers, hospitals, local American Cancer Society offices, and other community settings. Find a local group program via the link above.
One-on-One Consultations

One-on-one consultations are offered in salons in some areas by Look Good…Feel Better volunteer cosmetologists using the individual’s own makeup as learning tools.

Self-help Materials

Self-help materials, including a video or DVD and instructional booklet, are available to those who cannot locally access Look Good…Feel Better. Please call 1-800-395-LOOK (5665) to request a kit in English or Spanish.”

This sounds like a boost during the rigors of chemo:
I know some folks that signed up for Chemo Angels and they really enjoyed the encouragement and support during cancer treatment.
“Chemo Angels is a volunteer organization dedicated to adding a ray of sunshine to the lives of those undergoing IV chemo treatment. They believe people going through the physical, emotional and mental rigors of chemotherapy deserve lots of encouragement.Since their service is provided through the postal mail, your location is unimportant. They have many international patients and volunteers as well.”

What a BLESSING to cancer patients in these areas of the country! :)
“Angie’s Spa Cancer Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that funds FREE (in-hospital) massages and other integrative medicine services to men and women undergoing chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. These services are designed to alleviate painful side effects, provide relaxation to enhance traditional treatments, and give cancer patients a self-esteem boost.
Angie’s Spa is a funder only. We are not a retail spa, but rather a non-profit foundation that funds accredited programs in qualifying cancer centers. We distribute a Request for Proposal to the Cancer Center or Integrative Medicine Department of a hospital interested in applying for a grant. Those Centers design their own programs that if funded, will use their own staff or outside contractors. If the Center is selected then we enter into a contract with them. They submit an interim and final report and we are in touch with them regularly for advice and feedback and visit the Center at least once a year, sometimes quarterly depending on the needs and requests of the Center. The Centers also administer a questionnaire to the patients that provide them and us with feedback. They promote and publicize their program and we encourage them to fundraise for it. All the money received in any fundraiser goes directly to their program.
Angie’s Spa prides itself on the fact that 100% of our donations go directly toward the patients services at each hospital program. This is possible due to the generosity of the hospitals assuming all overhead costs and pro bono services for the establishment and day to day operations of the organization.
We post current articles in the support of cancer patients using therapeutic massages and other treatments. 1. Paula,
You are magnificent! You are so gracious and dedicated to helping others. I will ask my oncologist if there is someplace that this list may be hung so others can benefit from it as well.
I had my last herceptin treatment on October 10. Then turned around and had carpal tunnel surgery on my left hand on October 15. I am recovering nicely and get the bandages off October 26. Hopefully I will get some regular feeling back in my hand soon, God willing.
I HOPE and pray that this finds you and your family doing well.
    God Bless. Lovingly, Kathy

This looks like sooooooooooo much fun to me! I’m past their age guideline at 54 but I called and inquired about the age restriction and spoke to someone at First Descents who said to apply anyway, that there is talk that they might expand that in the future. My friend went on a surfing weekend recently with them and loved it. The description below is copied and pasted from their website. Fellow Cancer Survivors: anybody here go on one of these trips already or interested in going? First step is to apply!
    Paula

“First Descents offers young adult cancer fighters and survivors a free outdoor adventure experience designed to empower them to climb, paddle and surf beyond their diagnosis, defy their cancer, reclaim their lives and connect with others doing the same.
Our programs are all over the country and range anywhere from 2 days to 1 week. Any young adult with cancer is eligible regardless of physical challenges, diagnosis or prognosis!”

“Athletes 4 Cancer is dedicated to enriching lives through the healing powers of the elements and the outdoors as a way to move forward after cancer.

Camp is open to young survivors who have been diagnosed between the ages of 18 and 40. Camps are FREE for survivors to attend! On occasion, we host special trips where a fundraising component may be required. Participants must arrange and cover their travel to camp.

We believe that every survivor should have access to the healing characteristics that the elements and the outdoors offer. Athletes 4 Cancer creates life-changing experiences for cancer fighters and survivors through outdoor adventure programs that challenge, support, and inspire individuals to rebuild their lives after cancer.

We recognize an immediate need for viable resources and survivorship-focused programs in our community. Cancer survivors face unique challenges after cancer, with life turning upside down physically, emotionally, and psychologically. Cancer may have spared these individual their lives, but the scars left behind are often more severe than the fight itself.

A4C introduces fighters and survivors to the snow or ocean environment, empowering them to find healing and achievement through surfing, standup paddling, outrigger canoeing, snowboarding, and other outdoor adventures. Our goal is to transform survivor outlook on life, empower them to find confidence to thrive, succeed and inspire others facing cancer to do the same.

“The Cup With Love Project was founded in a living room, over a cup of tea and amongst good friends. Inspired by simple, but thoughtful acts of kindness bestowed upon her during her cancer treatment, Cup With Love founder, Molly Ximenez was inspired to share that same compassion with newly diagnosed cancer patients. The concept of gifting a tea cup to those on a cancer journey, or those whose lives have been impacted by cancer, grew from these humble beginnings and today has profoundly touched the lives of individuals world-wide.

Molly’s vision lead to the formal creation of “the Cup With Love Project” in 2005, as a recognized not-for-profit organization. Since then, the Cup With Love Project has collected cups, wrapped and provided those gifts of love to thousands of cancer survivors undergoing treatment. Thanks both to the continued efforts of Molly and a band of loving volunteers, the same acts of compassion and kindness continue.

Sacramento, California (USA)-based, the Cup With Love Project serves to empower those traveling through their cancer journey with love and hope, by letting them know they are not alone and that they have the inner strength to fight the fight through the Cup With Love Project community.”

  5. Tips for managing the financial cost of caregiving

    http://www.curetoday.com/index.cfm/f…-of-caregiving
    BY ELIZABETH WHITTINGTON | JUNE 24, 2009
“In Hard Times, caregivers learn the cost of cancer caregiving can be both expensive and surprising. Not only do caregivers and patients deal with lost wages, co-pays, and deductibles, but also the hidden costs, such as travel expenses, support services, and special meals, in addition to time spent on researching, coordinating appointments, and endless hours on the phone with insurance companies. Caregivers who don’t live with the patient must also factor in time away from work or their own family, possible travel and lodging expenses, and paid help when they are away from the patient.
Here are a few financial tips to get caregivers over the hump:
    1. Set up a free website, such as CaringBridge, Lotsa Helping Hands, Share The Care, and the Patient/Partner Project, for your support team (and have them invite their friends and family who can help!) to let them know when you need help with child care, transportation, meals, errands, and other services. Many times people want to help, but they don’t know how to ask or what to do. Having a list of needs available to everyone will prevent 15 calorie-rich casseroles on your doorstep the first week.
    2. Several organizations offer free or discounted rates for travel and lodging if a patient must travel for treatment. Corporate Angel Network offers free rides for patients traveling to treatment. Joe’s House offers discounted hotel rooms, and the American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge offers free lodging for patients and caregivers.
    3. Tap into services that help pay for cancer care, such as the Patient Advocate Foundation’s Co-Pay Relief and various drug assistance programs.
    4. It may take time, but it’s worth keeping insurance statements, bills, and medical records organized. Follow a strategy to make sure you’re getting the most out of your insurance plan.
    5. Take advantage of tax exemptions for cancer expenses, including mileage and transportation costs associated with treatment.
    6. It may take some searching online, but there are grants and services available through various local organizations that may help pay for child care, house cleaning, transportation, and other basic needs. Your local hospital and non-profit cancer organizations may also have information on these services.
    7. Look into services and grants provided by non-profit organizations that focus on your cancer type. For example, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society provides financial assistance to patients in significant financial need, and the Colorectal CareLine Financial Aid Fund provides assistance for travel, lodging, and child care.
    8. Don’t hesitate to flash the “cancer card” sometimes, even if the patient is past treatment. Ask about special discounts provided by companies for products or services used during cancer treatment. Many airlines offer discounted rates if traveling to a specific hospital. Childhood cancer survivors (and children of adult cancer survivors) are eligible for specific college scholarships from various organizations.
Know any other tips to help shoulder the finanical burden of cancer caregiving? Please add your own!”

What being an ‘active patient’ involves in practice
How to turn faith and hope into verbs and wishes into actions

How to live in accordance with your own way of ‘being, relating and creating’ to support recovery prospects and to improve your quality of life
To create a life with more balance, meaning and fulfilment.
Phil Kerslake’s Book-For-Patients Programme aims to make free copies of his book available to patients at locations where they are receiving their diagnoses, treatments, or support. The Programme has already resulted in around 6,000 copies being donated for the benefit of patients in Wellington, Auckland and Central Otago. In Wellington, the book is available for those going through cancer treatment from the Blood and Cancer Centre, Wellington Hospital. Please also see Phil’s website.

“Crickett’s Answer for Cancer is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization* that was formed in memory of Crickett Julius, who passed away in October of 2006, only four months after being diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer at the age of 39. As her mother and cousin, we founded Crickett’s Answer for Cancer to support women with breast cancer. We provide wigs, mastectomy and lymphedema products, massage, facials, and other pampering services, as a way to help women feel feminine and beautiful despite losing their hair and/or breasts.

A woman with breast cancer often feels a loss of her identity and self-esteem as a woman, but may consider these frivolous items for which she should not spend money. Like many women, she may be busy caring for her children, family, and possibly even her own parents… all at once. As a result, she may place herself last on the priority list. Crickett’s Answer for Cancer reminds women with breast cancer to care for themselves too, as feeling good about themselves and having time for relaxation are important for healing, and for managing life with breast cancer. By providing no-cost products and services, we honor these courageous women with breast cancer, as well as the memory of Crickett Julius.

We rely on the kindness and generosity of our supporters, including a number of hair stylists, massage therapists, and aestheticians who so graciously offer their services to the patients we serve. You may also support our cause by becoming a volunteer, placing a coin collection canister in your business, sponsoring our golf tournament, or making a tax-deductible donation to Crickett’s Answer for Cancer. In each of these ways, you CAN make a difference in the life of a woman with breast cancer. If interested, please contact us for more information.

~~Requests for assistance are fulfilled on a first-come, first-served basis. Please contact us to ensure that we can honor your request at this time.~~

    “Our Mission
Through consistent advocacy, stewardship and productive partnerships, we will deliver highly effective programs that enable those undergoing crisis or chronic illness to regain strength, mend spirits and become families and kids again.

    The Need
Almost all families are touched by illness or crisis during the course of a lifetime, but some families are struck particularly close to home. When a child develops a life-threatening disease, or a parent is diagnosed with a debilitating illness, the impact on the entire family is intense and often overwhelming. Sadly, families facing serious illness or crisis have little opportunity for respite from the stresses of their daily lives. While there are many camps that assist children facing illness, there are very few programs specifically designed to help the entire family unit. That is why Deliver the Dream Family Retreats are so important. Our program helps meet a vital need for families struggling to endure during times of crisis.

(direct quotes copied and pasted below from this web site)

    Our Primary Missions:
Circle of Hope is located out of Duluth, MN and is an organization committed to serving breast cancer patients in northern Minnesota and northern
Wisconsin. It is a 501(c) 3 charitable organization serving the public interest of helping people of any age in poverty and financial distress with a breast
    cancer diagnosis.

Our mission is achieved in several ways.

    1. We pay payments for breast cancer treatment bills from designated funds that have been raised from fundraisers, third party fundraisers, small grants and designated donor money. These payments are paid to the providers of the services not to patients. They fill out the paper work.

    2. Circle of Hope has set up a fund for paying bills to help breast cancer patients with rent/mortgage, utilities, food and gas cards. Bus passes are also available.
The money from this account comes from donations, fundraisers, third party fundraisers and grants. A large grant for this purpose solely came The Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the Minnesota affilate. This is a 7 page application with a cover letter initiated by a social worker or financial worker. This is for Minnesota residents of northern and middle Minnesota.

3.Sometimes other organizations specify a donation for patient bill paying. There is limited money for Wisconsin but there are always new donors who want to help the cause. It is best to call and ask.

Circle of Hope is committed toward helping people with a breast cancer diagnosis by improving their lives. Financial assistance will be given to patients as
the funds are provided and clients qualify.

This group is on hold at the moment: Circle of Hope has a support group called “Circle of Support” which is for any breast cancer survivor and/or gynecological patient. Supporters will be included if there is room if confidential matters are not being discussed. Gynecological patients will be given help in this
new start up initiative by being a part of the Circle of Support group and participating in various activities of their choosing.
Personalized 1 on 1 conferences: At this time, someone can meet with you on an individual basis. If you would like personalized time or 1 on 1 time to discuss any issue call and we will set up a time that we can meet you. It maybe in the office or we can go out for coffee. We have a resource library of materials.1.218.525.1905, ask for Peggy or call our office at 1.218.464.1626.
A partnership of ours: abcd-after breast cancer diagnosis-the power of one-to-one, Take Your Breast Cancer Journey With Someone Who’s Been “In Your Shoes.”Call 1.414.977.1780 or 1.800.977.4121, You can get immediate support from beast cancer survivors, helpline mentors, be lined up with individualized matches from Match Mentors, and they can even connect you with more resources. This is a free service. Also check out their website at: http://www.abcdbreastcancersupport.org

Circle of Hope is exclusively educational and charitable.

(Approved by the Board on 7/2/12.)
    ———————————————-

Breast Cancer Treatment bills include breast cancer surgery, oncology/chemo, radiation, dental work (related to chemo), lymph edema expenses and
prescription loophole drug coverage Payments are made to the providers of services. Patients need to apply for help. Circle of Hope is often the last
payee in the process. They help those in financial distress and poverty. There are income guidelines and criteria.

There are a couple of ways patients can apply. A client can fill out the grant form online, get the form at their clinic/hospital or call or have the forms
sent in the mail (218.525.1905 or 218.464.1626). Bills must be submitted with the application or sent in the mail with the Authorization For Use or
Disclosure of Information Form. The forms need to be filled out by the patient as these are legal documents.

How does the block grant treatment payment program work? Financial help will be given based on the application and meeting specific criteria from
a grid developed from the application. Patients should always go through their clinics and hospitals to see what financial resources are available first. After
this procedure, clients should contact Circle of Hope. This organization follows H.I.P.P.A. policies, adheres to patient privacy and pays directly to
providers for breast cancer treatment services.

What are other resources that are available to breast cancer patients?
Other resources include financial help with bills (rent/mortgage, utilities, gas cards. bus cards, and food cards). More money is available in Minnesota.
If you would like to donate, let us know by sending your donation in the mail or adding a donation by credit card online. These applications will be available
through clinics/hospitals, as there are specific people who need to fill out portions before the patient fills out his or her section. Talk to an oncologist social
    worker or financial worker.

What are other ways a breast cancer patient can receive help?
There are other services offered as well by Circle of Hope. If one does not qualify for financial help, the secretary can point out the resources that are
available locally, statewide and nationally to get the needed help.

What are ” feel good social activities”?
Some services may be achieved through our community support group called Circle of Support, telephone calls, one-to-one meetings or
participation in inclusive group activities. Circle of Support group meets the last Wednesday of the month (except in August and December).
The new time is 4 p.m.-5 p.m.at 314 W. Superior Street, # 610.To participate RSVP to Peggy at 525-1905 or e-mail for details to:

-Circle of Hope has a resource library of materials, books, and CD’s.

We have partnered with a few other organizations that can help breast cancer patients. One is: abcd after breast cancer diagnosis,
the power of one-to-one. This is the former Y-Me staff and the organization is located in Glendale, Wisconsin. Call and they will line you up
with a trained mentor or companion with your same diagnosis to speak to about unanswered questions you may have. They want your calls and
there is “the power of one-to-one.” There is no cost. It is a non-profit as well. Call 1.414.977.1780 or toll free: 1.800.977.4121. Their website is: http://www.abcdbreastcancersupport.org

Another partner we are recommending is the The Cancer Support Community, a global network of Education and Hope. This group has an
online support group that is great. They are located out of Washington, D.C. Both of these agencies Peggy talked to in Texas and has written them. http://www.CancerSupportCommunity.org. This is a free service.

“Hello my name is Amanda Rosen! A couple months ago I came up with an idea to make Port Pillows after some friends of mine said that the seat belt was hurting them when they were in the car driving to and from infusions.

They told me that they would stick the seat belt behind their back, so that it would not rub them. My goal was to find a safer way. This is when I reached out for help from the community. I was able to get supplies donated and people to donate their time to sew pillows. The response was amazing! We donated over 1,600 pillows locally and have personally mailed more then 400 special individual requests both in the United States and internationally. We have delivered pillows to all the Levine Cancer Institute Infusions Centers, Levine Children’s Hospital, Healthy & Home and Home Infusion Locations. We have expanded quickly as you can imagine to several hospitals and support groups across the country. We have just completed an order for a cancer support group in England.

Shipping all over the world. Port pillows are for anyone that has a port! We have all different colors, themes, special interests and children fabric like superhero’s, princesses and themes that are popular for children and adults! We even take special requests if we can!

The best part is that the pillows are 100% free to all patients with a port and that includes shipping. We are asking for donations for supplies and that also supports us being able to continue to provide something so small during such a difficult journey for these very couragous patients. We have had an outpouring of support from volunteers reaching out to see how they can help. It takes all kinds of support to continue this wonderful project and we can’t do it without all of you. A very special lady Mrs. Robin Ciarico Harris is an amazing woman who jumped into action and has become an extension of our family. She is our sewing expert and has put so many hours into this project. We need continued help and support. I have also met a wonderful lady Ms. Susan Morgan with Springs Creative Products Group that has made so many generous donations of amazing fabric. Again the tremendous outreach from the community goes from “Charlotte and Beyond. The community has been great!

We have created a Paypal Donation link because people have wanted to donate and do not know where to go to donate. This money will be used for supplies and shipping! More details to follow regarding a local “Sew-A-Thon/BYOM” at the Morrison YMCA. I’m incredibly inspired by the kindness and generosity. The patients are the courageous ones fighting the fight and if we can provide a little comfort during their journey that is what it is all about.

    Many Thanks!”

Our goal is to transform survivor outlook on life, empower them to find confidence to thrive, succeed and inspire others facing cancer to do the same.”

“Knitted Knockers are special handmade breast prosthesis for women who have undergone mastectomies or other procedures to the breast. Traditional breast prosthetics are usually expensive, heavy, sweaty and uncomfortable. They typically require special bras or camisoles with pockets and can’t be worn for weeks after surgery. Knitted Knockers on the other hand are soft, comfortable, beautiful and when placed in a regular bra they take the shape and feel of a real breast. Our special volunteer knitters provide these free to those requesting them. Knitted knockers can be adjusted to fill the gap for breasts that are uneven and easily adapted for those going through reconstruction by simply removing some of the stuffing.”

Cancer is thousands of distinct, molecular diseases, with hundreds of potential treatments. Experts seldom agree on the optimal way to treat any cancer. Cancer Commons levels the playing field by bringing the world’s collective knowledge and resources to each patient and continuously refining that knowledge based on clinical results.”

“What we can do for you:

Imagine that you or someone you loved was just diagnosed with cancer. You’re overwhelmed, confused, and terrified all at once. Forced to make life-or-death decisions, under the gun. With no data. You consult Dr. Google and get thousands of search results, most of which are irrelevant to you. You seek second opinions and get conflicting recommendations. Often, the right path is unclear. Occasionally, there are no paths at all.

Cancer Commons is here to help.
We don’t give you a second opinion, we give you the best “second opinion” available.

We alert you to brilliant science, delivered with a great bedside manner.

We don’t list every clinical trial, we highlight the best trials for you.

If there are no good trials, your case will be reviewed by experts.

If you’re out of options, we can connect you directly with cancer researchers who may have promising investigational therapies.”

“Cancer Commons is a great first step to help you understand your disease, clarify decisions you have to make, and access the latest treatment information your community-based oncologist may not have.”

“Cancer Commons is one of the few organizations that is actively promoting patients having a strong, educated voice in their treatment.”

“Cancer commons was amazing in providing support and info on possible clinical trial options. There was nothing else like it to help wade through all the info and find relevant trials.”

Hat Project – Free Hats for Cancer Patients

We understand that humor is key to survival. As they say, “Laughter is the best medicine.” Indeed it is. That is why Breast Friends developed the Hat Project. When one of the co-founders was given a funny hat that said, “No Hair Day,” it changed her world. Where she had been afraid to go out in public out of fear that people would stare, she was suddenly excited to be seen in public. The funny hat allowed people to talk to her, rather than about her. Portland artist Jo Gefre met Breast Friends and created a hat that truly helps! Pink or blue hats, complete with a funny caption (‘Has Anyone Seen my Hare?’ or ‘Temporarily Bald, Permanently Beautiful’), can help turn the heartbreak of hair loss due to chemo therapy in to an opportunity for laugh therapy.
Tackling a tough situation “head on” often is the key to getting to the other side. When we laugh endorphins actually diminish physical and psychological pain. We believe that you can heal through laughter and that this hat can be a reminder to laugh often and laugh well.
“Thank you so much for the cute hat! I will wear it with pride”

Casting For Recovery Expanding Their Outreach https://castingforrecovery.org/about-casting-for-recovery/:

Inaugural Retreat for Native American Women
In October 2017, the Casting For Recovery AR/OK program will host a pilot retreat exclusively for Native American women who have experienced breast cancer. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Native American women and access to resources is often limited. Women who reside in Oklahoma, affiliate with a tribe, and have received a breast cancer diagnosis are eligible to apply. Building on the experiences from this first retreat, CfR hopes to expand this program to serve Native American women in other areas of the country.

    https://castingforrecovery.org/breas…nsas-oklahoma/

CfR has international program partners in Canada, UK/Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Italy.

Casting for Recovery piloted their first program specifically catered toward women with Stage IV (metastatic) breast cancer in 2016. Recognizing that women with advanced stage disease have specific needs, CfR plans to expand metastatic retreats in the future.

In 2017, we will host 3 retreats for women with Stage IV breast cancer: one in TX, one in GA and on in CO. Women with metastatic BC living in those states may apply to attend the metastatic retreat in their state. Note: Women living in these states who previously attended a CfR retreat may apply again to attend their local metastatic retreat.

If you have Stage IV breast cancer and there isn’t a metastatic-only retreat in your area, you may apply for the regular CfR retreat in your area Our regular retreats are open to women of any age, in any stage of breast cancer.

We hope to expand our metastatic retreats to new areas each year.

Inaugural Retreat Held for Military Women with Breast Cancer

In Spring 2017, Casting for Recovery teamed up with Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing (PHWFF) to hold a retreat exclusively for female disabled veterans and active duty military women who have experienced breast cancer. Thirteen women, representing the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines, came together on April 21-23, 2017 at Harman’s Log Cabins in West Virginia to support one another and experience the peace and serenity of fly fishing.

The participants came from all over the U.S. and ranged in age from 36 to 66. Medical and psychosocial sessions supported women navigating issues related to their military and cancer experience, such as treatment options, side effects, PTSD, Military Sexual Trauma (MST), and depression. Fly fishing served as an outlet for coping with the challenges of these topics, and provided a simple, authentic connection with nature.

Huge thanks to BAE Systems, Harman’s Log Cabins, Fly Fisherman magazine, Yeti, Costa, and Cheeky Fishing for sponsoring this inaugural retreat. This retreat program is the first of its kind in the country, and Casting for Recovery is currently making plans for expanded retreat opportunities for military women in 2018.

“Being with other veteran women that have been/are fighting breast cancer helps me connect to people that understand what I am going through. Through our shared experiences it made it easier for me to ask questions about my condition and not be judged.” – 2017 retreat participant

    —————
Casting for Recovery provides free fly fishing retreats for women with breast cancer
70% of the women who attend Casting for Recovery retreats have never been to a support group
CfR currently offers 55 retreats across the country, serving 800 women each year. To date 8,000+ women have been served
CfR relies on the support of more than 1,600 volunteers nationwide, including medical and psychosocial professionals, fly fishing instructors and alumnae

    General Information and FAQ
*Registration is available on a first come, first served basis through the Image Reborn website and is available to any woman that has been diagnosed with breast cancer (one time per person please). Schedule subject to change. Space is limited, so a completely refundable deposit is required to hold your space and secure meals, spa treatments, etc.

    FAQ:

What time does the retreat start and when does it end?

Our retreats begin on a Friday around 5pm. If you need to be a little late, no problem! Just give us a heads up so we don’t worry about you. Dinner is usually served around 6:30pm. We typically wrap up the weekend on Sunday around noon.

Where do these retreats take place?

Usually in Park City, but we have been known to spice it up from time to time in one of the other beautiful mountainous regions in the Wasatch. Short answer: in the mountains within an hour drive from Salt Lake City.

How many women come to each retreat?

Typically, 6-8 guests can be accommodated at one time. However, we do occasionally have access to accommodations that allow for more guests in which case we limit registration to 12-15.

    Who is eligible to attend?

Any woman who has ever been diagnosed with breast cancer.

What kinds of activities are provided?

It varies from retreat to retreat, but your retreat might include any of these activities: yoga, acupuncture, facials, meditation, art therapy, nutrition education, medical Q&A, massage therapy, and more. We also try to include free time in the agenda to allow for personal conversations, hot tub time (if available), nature walks, rest, etc.

What do I need to bring with me?

Our weekends are very informal. We recommend bringing comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing. We will let you know if dining out at a restaurant is on the itinerary so you can choose to dress up if you’d like. Also, we do take professional photos at the end of the weekend so if you have something special you would like to wear, we encourage you to do so! All food, snacks, and beverages are provided.

I want to attend, but don’t have the financial means to travel from out of state. What are my resources?

We can help! Visit our Travel Scholarship page on our website, fill out the online form, and we will do our best to help you with airfare. Please note that we are only able to award airfare to one recipient per retreat

When is a good time in my treatment to attend?

That is a decision best made with consultation to your doctor to see if he/she recommends travel and also to coordinate with your treatment schedule. We want you to be able to enjoy all of the activities available to you, so it is best to plan to come on a weekend when you anticipate you will be feeling well – not in pain from recent surgery or trying to manage treatment side effects.

    What is the cancellation policy?

We understand that due to treatment, there are times when confirmed attendees are not feeling up to attending. Please notify us at your earliest opportunity (at least 48 in advance for medical reasons, and at least 1 week for non-emergency reasons) so that another woman can benefit from this experience and your deposit will be refunded. Cancelling outside of these deadlines will result in a forfeit of the $100 deposit. Retreat space is limited, which means we are only able to accommodate participants once. Refunds will be issued immediately following your arrival at the retreat.

Who do I contact if I still have questions?

    Please email Ally at Allyson@imagerebornfoundation.org

In 2002, her realization came true when Deliver the Dream held its first retreat for families who have a parent with cancer. Since then, Deliver the Dream has brought hope and healing to nearly 7,000 family members across the South East United States. There are retreats for those with various illnesses, including families with a parent with breast cancer.

    Family Cancer Retreat Overview

“CSNM’s Family Cancer Retreat focuses on educating NM’s adult cancer patients/survivors and their primary caregivers on the process of surviving, from the difficulties of handling the initial diagnosis, through coping with therapy, through a variety of medical and social challenges relating to at-home care and the emotional issues associated with surviving. In addition to providing a temporary escape from the day-to-day challenges of living with cancer, the retreat fosters development of supportive relationships between participants that can continue in the months and years ahead. There is no other program like this in NM.

Launched in 2002, the Family Cancer Retreat is now the largest general cancer education program in New Mexico and the largest program of its type in the U.S.

The program is held twice each year. During each three-day program, over 250 people from 100-120 New Mexican families coping with cancer attend sessions led by a variety of the state’s leading cancer specialists. Typical sessions include:

Choosing the Most Appropriate Treatment/Clinical Trial
    New Developments in Cancer Treatment
    “Ask the Oncologist” Panels
    Coping with Treatment-Related Side Effects
Accessing Cancer-Related Information on the Internet
    Patient and Family Communication
    Caring for the Caregiver
    Talking with Kids About Cancer
    Complementary, Alternative and Integrative Therapies
    Hospice and Palliative Care
    Cancer-Related Legal and Insurance Issues
You’ve Completed Treatment – Now What?
    Meditation, Yoga and Creativity Workshops
The retreats also provide participants with the opportunity to spend time with each other in informal sessions, speaking with and learning from others who are coping with some of the same issues. Supervised child care and recreational activities are provided for children and teens during the educational sessions so that parents can give their full attention to the program.”

Your Shay Sharpe’s Pink Wishes packet will contain a form to be given to your treating physician, to ensure that you are healthy enough to participate in your wish. To request a wish, mail or e-mail your written wish, a current photo and a copy of your state issued ID to Shay Sharpe’s Pink Wishes. We ask that you request two wishes, just in case we have a problem granting one, we will grant the other.

Wishes must be requested by the wish recipient only. This must be your only wish being granted by a wish granting organization. Once you submit your request you are giving Shay Sharpe’s Pink Wishes permission to share your request with potential wish granters and social media.
