Jeremiah 9:23-24

King James Version (KJV)

23Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches:  24But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD.

Jeremiah 9:23-24

New Living Translation (NLT)

23 This is what the Lord says:
“Don’t let the wise boast in their wisdom,
or the powerful boast in their power,
or the rich boast in their riches.
24 But those who wish to boast
      should boast in this alone:
that they truly know me and understand that I am the Lord
      who demonstrates unfailing love
and who brings justice and righteousness to the earth,
and that I delight in these things.
      I, the Lord, have spoken!

Jeremiah 9:23-24

Amplified Bible (AMP)

23Thus says the Lord: Let not the wise and skillful person glory and boast in his wisdom and skill; let not the mighty and powerful person glory and boast in his strength and power; let not the person who is rich [in physical gratification and earthly wealth] glory and boast in his [temporal satisfactions and earthly] riches;    24But let him who glories glory in this: that he understands and knows Me [personally and practically, directly discerning and recognizing My character], that I am the Lord, Who practices loving-kindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth, for in these things I delight, says the Lord.

Lord, every single gift comes from You…“Lift my gaze to see life from Your perspective. Help me to understand-and treasure-every good thing You send…”

476. “How smooth, oh, stone of the sandy beach; How silken and curved in my hand! How long have you traveled these fretful waves Till you came to this quiet sand? And how many times, oh, how many times Did the wild waves toss you high? And plunge you fiercely against the land, While the thunders filled the sky? How many times did the lifting swell Deposit you far on the shore, Then drag you, and roll you, and rub you along In friction forevermore? Ah! You are a stone; and the ceaseless pound And the grinding that knows no end Can cause no pain in your adamant heart. You yielded and yielded again, Till now, in the contour of loveliness You are sculpted so round and so fair. On the windswept beach I stand in awe Of the One who has flung you there. Oh, Father of waters! Oh, Sculptor divine, My heart, it is not a stone! And the tossings and tumblings of life are pain; Yet, help me Thy wisdom to own; To yield to Thy waters, Thy polishing hand, The ache to commit unto Thee; Till I shall be found as a gemstone indeed, A marvel beside Thy sea.”  —By Lois Kempton

  1. Love those verses, Jeremiah 9:23,24. I love how He shows unfailing love and yet brings justice and righteousness to the earth. What a wonderful God we have who loves us with an unfailing love! Praying you feel wrapped in the arms of His unfailing love today!

  2. Dear Paula and John,
I love that reflection by Lois Kempton. Especially her prayer at the end to Lord –
“Help me, Thy wisdon to own; to Yield to Thy waters, Thy Polishing Hand…til I be found as a gemstone indeed; speaks to my heart as I so want to be bveautiful for God in all ways. How I want to serve Him and make Him happy; to alleviate His suffering with my love and service, perhaps to give Him a laugh at the stupidity of my antics and have Him smile and shake His head as He says “here we go again” as I forget the lessons he has already tought me and He has to remind me yet another time. Yes I want to be a gemstone for Him, one He has shaped and polished until He is ready to call me home. I know I fail so often, but He keeps encouraging me as I strive to remember all He has done and tought me. Someday, I will be the best person He would have me be; and I will keep working to be that person until He calls me home to Himself. Then I long to hear Him say “Well done My good and faithful servant, enter into My Father’s house. Kathy PS. Feel free to share anything I write to you.
