“Whatever, Lord”

Funny humor cartoon of bureaucratic hospital reception
A farmer named Muldoon lived alone in the Irish countryside except for a pet dog he had for a long time.

The dog finally died and Muldoon went to the parish priest, saying
“Father, the dog is dead. Could you possibly be saying a Mass for the poor creature?”

Father Patrick told the farmer “No, we can’t have services for an
animal in the church, but I’ll tell you what, there’s a new denomination down the road apiece, and no telling what they believe in, but maybe they’ll do something for the animal.”

Muldoon said “I’ll go right now. By the way, do you think $50,000 is enough to donate for the service?”

Father Patrick replied, “Why didn’t you tell me the dog was Catholic?”

“When Barbara Johnson discovered that her son Larry was homosexual, angry words were exchanged and her son left home, eventually changing his name, disowning the family, and disappearing into a gay lifestyle. Six years would pass before he made his way back home. She had already lost one son in Vietnam, and another in Alaska-the victim of a drunk driver.

“It’s always darkest just before it goes totally black,” she told me, laughing. “I felt like an elephant was sitting on my chest. My teeth itched. I didn’t think there was any way I could possibly get through all the losses. It is a monstrous myth that faith in God is an insurance policy against the blows of life. Tragedies happen every day and Christians are not immune.”

Barbara climbed in the car one day with suicide on her mind. “I couldn’t believe I had reached that point. And suddenly I realized that I might not be successful in my suicide attempt and could end up making baskets in the home for the bewildered. `Lord,’ I said, `I can’t handle this anymore. If he never comes home again, whatever happens, I’m giving my son to You.’

“When I said, `Whatever, Lord,’ I felt a complete sense of relief.

“From then on the Lord gave me joy. When we relinquish our burdens to God, He offers us joy and growth as we travel over the bumps and washouts of life. Not always in a limo sometimes in a pickup truck, a bicycle, or even a wheelchair. No matter. The important thing is to become aware of God’s care for us in even the smallest ways so that we may have abundant joy.”

My heart’s song to the Lord this morning:

Psalm 113:1-5

 1 Praise the Lord!

Yes, give praise, O servants of the Lord.
Praise the name of the Lord!
2 Blessed be the name of the Lord
      now and forever.
 3 Everywhere—from east to west—
praise the name of the Lord.
 4 For the Lord is high above the nations;
his glory is higher than the heavens.

5 Who can be compared with the Lord our God,
      who is enthroned on high?

Lord, every single good gift comes from You…

355. Praise to God who continues to bring me, little by little,  to the genuinely  “Whatever, Lord” point.
356. Snuggly, soft socks
357. Cool, refreshing breezes off the lake
 358. Today would have been my appt for half doses of chemo treatment #6 had things worked out differently with side effects.  I am glad to be done and to be detoxing from the stuff instead.

Rejoicing in His goodness and faithfulness,

The Station

“If people were meant to pop out of bed, we’d all sleep in toasters.” 🙂

Mr. Smith was brought to a Catholic hospital and taken quickly in for coronary surgery.
The operation went well and, as the groggy man regained consciousness, he was reassured by a Sister of Mercy, who was waiting by his bed.
“Mr. Smith, you’re going to be just fine,” said the nun, gently patting his hand. “We do need to know, however, how you intend to pay for your stay here. Are you covered by insurance?”

“No, I’m not,” the man whispered hoarsely.

“Then can you pay in cash?” persisted the nun.

“I’m afraid I cannot, Sister.”

“Well, do you have any close relatives?” the nun questioned sternly.

“Just my sister in New Mexico,” he volunteered. “But she’s a humble spinster nun.”

“Oh, I must correct you, Mr. Smith. Nuns are not spinsters – they are married to God.”

“Wonderful,” said Mr. Smith. “In that case, please send the bill to my brother-in -law.”

By Robert J. Hastings

“TUCKED AWAY in our subconscious minds is an idyllic vision.  We see ourselves on a long, long trip that almost spans the continent.  We’re traveling by passenger train, and out the windows we drink in the passing scene of cars on nearby highways, of children waving at a crossing, of cattle grazing on a distant hillside, of smoke pouring from a power plant, of row upon row of corn and wheat, of flatlands and valleys, of mountains and rolling hillsides, of city skylines and village halls, of biting winter and blazing summer and cavorting spring and docile fall.

But uppermost in our minds is the final destination.  On a certain day at a certain hour we will pull into the station.  There will be bands playing and flags waving.  And once we get there so many wonderful dreams will come true.  So many wishes will be fulfilled and so many pieces of our lives finally will be neatly fitted together like a completed jigsaw puzzle.  How restlessly we pace the aisles, (dreading) the minutes for loitering, waiting, waiting, waiting for the station.

However, sooner or later we must realize there is no one station, no one place to arrive at once and for all.  The true joy of life is the trip.  The station is only a dream.  It constantly outdistances us.

When we get to the station that will be it!” we cry.  Translated it means, “When I’m 18 that will be it!  When I buy a new 450 SL Mercedes Benz, that will be it!  When I put the last kid through college that will be it!  When I have paid off the mortgage that will be it!  When I win a promotion that will be it!  When I reach the age of retirement that will be it!  I shall live happily ever after!”

Unfortunately, once we get “it,” then “it” disappears.  The station somehow hides itself at the end of an endless track.

“Relish the moment” is a good motto, especially when coupled with Psalm 118:24: “This is the day which the Lord hath made, we will rejoice and be glad in it.”  It isn’t the burdens of today that drive men mad.  Rather, it is regret over yesterday or fear of tomorrow.  Regret and fear are twin thieves who would rob us of today.

So, stop pacing the aisles and counting the miles.  Instead, climb more mountains, eat more ice cream, go barefoot more often, swim more rivers, watch more sunsets, laugh more and cry less.  Life must be lived as we go along.  The station will come soon enough.”

Loved with everlasting love,
Led by grace that love to know,
Spirit, breathing from above,
You have taught me it is so.
O this full and perfect peace!
O this presence so divine!
In a love which cannot cease,
I am His, and He is mine.Heaven above is softer blue,
Earth around is sweeter green;
Something lives in every hue
Christless eyes have never seen:
Birds with gladder songs o’er-flow,
Flowers with deeper beauties shine,
Since I know, as now I know,
I am His, and He is mine.

His for ever, only His;
Who the Lord and me shall part?
Ah, with what a rest of bliss
Christ can fill the loving heart!
Heaven and earth may fade and flee;
First-born light in gloom decline;
But while God and I shall be,
I am His, and He is mine.

Loved with an Everlasting Love,

Turning my Faith Cup UP

“The grace of God is freely given to all, through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. We receive His grace by our faith. So turn your faith cup UP!”

1 Peter 5:7

New International Version (NIV)

Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

1 Peter 5:7

Amplified Bible (AMP)

Casting the ]whole of your care [all your anxieties, all your worries, all your concerns, [b]once and for all] on Him, for He cares for you affectionately and cares about you [c]watchfully.

In the book “Fearless” that I am reading,  Max Lucado talks about becoming a “Worry-slapper” and advises his readers to “treat frets like mosquitoes”.  Just as I wouldn’t procrastinate in slapping a blood sucking bug who is “snacking” on me–I must also deal promptly with thoughts of fear, despair, and anxiety.  I am finding the increasing neurological side effects from the chemo extra challenging on top of everything else right now.  I haven’t had chemo in over 4 weeks and yet the odd symptoms with my eyes and face and wierd, burning, numb sensations and pain from the neuropathy in my fingers and toes and is increasing, not decreasing.  This morning I feel discouraged and sad inside.  I wonder how come I am getting so many of my specific prayers about my health  answered opposite of what I am asking God for. It boils down to this I guess: I must walk by faith and not by sight.  God knows better how to answer my prayers than I do.  I know He is worthy of my complete trust no matter how things turn out.  1 Peter 5:7 is my answer: I will cast the whole entire weight of all my worries, concerns, anxieties, and circumstances on HIM because He cares for me. I hardly know what to do sometimes.  I am trying to “give up” in a good way–not in defeat, but as in fully surrendered to God.   He is absolutely able to take care of each problem on my behalf.  His answers are coming in different packages than i’ve been praying and hoping but He is God and I am not.  I sure can’t handle all this rough stuff–it’s too much for me– BUT HE CAN.

Lord, every single good gift comes from You…

(From James 1:7)   One Thousand Gifts   http://www.aholyexperience.com/
343. God is teaching me to be a “Worry Slapper”.  A lot of anxious, fearful thoughts are indeed bugging me.  There is a way I can effectively deal with the swarm of joy-sucking, peace draining thoughts that are attacking me. I can cast ALL my cares on Him because He cares for me. (1 Peter 5:7). I thank God that by God’s enabling power I choose to walk by faith, not sight.  Please increase my faith,Lord.  Mine is weak.
344. “The grace of God is freely given to ME, through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. I receive His grace by faith. I choose to turn my faith cup UP to receive His abundant grace!” (From Joyful Tunes cartoon)
345. Hugs.  Hugs feel so good.  I’m glad that God thought them up and that I get lots from my family and friends.

Psalm 42:11

New International Version (NIV)

11 Why, my soul, are you downcast?
   Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
   my Savior and my God.

Blessings Around Every Corner

If cartoons do not show up for email subscribers, it may be viewed at website: http://jpoliver.com/wordpress/
I don’t know how many people read the comments section of the blog but this one I am including below came through from Lillie yesterday.  I love it when I hear from you guys, encouraging me, letting me know you are praying for my family and me,  sometimes sharing some things God is teaching you too–THANKS to all who have done that!!!!!  I find it a real cheerer-upper and sincerely appreciate it.  I am unsure of the author of the quote below (can you possibly please add that in comments/reply section, Lillie?) but I was blessed by the thought and wanted to be sure others were blessed by it too:
“I read something neat this morning and want to share it with you.
> “God loves to bless you.  He has even declared that ‘blessings shall come upon you and overtake you.’  This means that you can’t run fast enough to escape them!  When you turn one corner, there is a blessing waiting for you.  When you turn another corner, you run smack into another blessing!
> “Today, it is no longer a question of how much or how well you have kept God’s commandments.  It is a question of how much you can believe God for His blessings.  All the promises of God in Christ are ‘Yes’, and because you are in Christ, you can say ‘Amen!’ to His blessings.  (2 Cor. 1:20)”
I was not familiar with that verse about blessings “overtaking someone” (sounds GREAT with me!) so I looked it up:

Deuteronomy 28:2 (NKJV) And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, because you obey the voice of the LORD your God.

Deuteronomy 28:2 (AMP) And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you if you heed the voice of the Lord your God.

God DOES love to bless His kids.  I know how happy it makes me to see my children really enjoying something I’ve given them: how much moreso that would be like God! Sometimes when a lot of hard things “happen”, like cancer and all it entails it is easy to forget all about His bountiful blessings He showers on us every day.  The truth is that he is LAVISHING me with His blessings as I walk with Him, right in the midst of this raging storm.

God has blessings around every corner.  Lord, please give me “eyes” to see, recognize, and appreciate all your lovely blessings .  Father, YOU bless my socks off every day, with Your wonderful, magnificant Self.  THANKS! 🙂

Lord, every single good gift comes from You…

340.”God loves to bless me!  He has even declared that ‘blessings shall come upon you and overtake you.’ in a reference in Deut 28:2.  I know from His Word that He loves to bless ALL of his children, including me.    When I turn one corner, there is a blessing waiting for me.  When I turn another corner, I run smack into another blessing! The thought that I can’t run fast enough to escape God’s blessings is a beautiful word picture to me and delights my soul. I desire very much to heed the voice of the Lord and follow Him closely.  What a joy His presence in my life is!  I can believe God for all His blessings. I can choose to THANK God for this trial that has drawn my heart closer to His wonderful self.  All the promises of God in Christ are ‘Yes’, and because I am in Christ, I can say ‘Amen!’ to His blessings.  (2 Cor. 1:20)” (Thoughts personalized from a quote Lillie shared in the blog)
341. Even though the neuropathy is becoming more painful lately, I was so happy to be able to rebound on my mini-trampoline a good while  yesterday morning and I will rebound again and take a nice walk along the river this morning.  Woohooo!  PROGRESS!

342. Isaiah 61:3 from the cartoon I found was a blessing to me today.  I will put on and keep on “a garment of praise”.
” …and provide for those who grieve in Zion—
to bestow on them a crown of beauty
   instead of ashes,
the oil of joy
   instead of mourning,
and a garment of praise
instead of a spirit of despair.
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
   a planting of the LORD
for the display of his splendor. “

Praising Him and thanking Him,

“Don’t be Afraid. Take Courage, I am here!” –Jesus

Good mornin’ :-D!

I ended up not getting chemo yesterday afterall due to increasing neurological side effects from the drugs.  I had a doctor’s appointment, got blood work (looks good) and had an infusion of IV Herceptin (which I’ve also been on that  I’ll continue for a year which targets the aggressive “Her 2” component of the cancer).  The two chemo drugs I’ve been taking (Carboplatin and Taxotere) will either be given as  half doses next Monday or we’ll eliminate the final #6 infusions altogether. The doctor will re-evaluate my symptoms later this week to see if they are improving  and likely we will make a decision together on how to best proceed then.  I would appreciate prayer for God’s wisdom, healing, and direction.  God can use chemo as a tool but it’s not like God “needs chemo” (or anything else for that matter) to heal me.  I keep thinking of this verse: “My soul, my soul, wait thou only upon God, for my expectation is found in Him”.  My ultimate hope lies in Him alone, not in any of the things we are doing or not doing.  I figure He’s the only One who can really make the treatments  “work” or “not work”. and reality is that I am absolutley safe and secure in His Hands, with the assurance that I can trust Him to do what is His very best!  What a great arrangement to have a Heavenly Father who not only personally designed and created my body, but Who also is my very own Great Physican right here with me 24/7/365!

I just started reading a library book (have several good books going) by Max Lucado called “Fearless”.  Great title for a great truth that applies to how we can live as His children.

“But Jesus spoke to them at once.“Don’t be afraid, he said.  “Take courage, I am here!”Matthew 14:27 (NLT)

Perfect Peace by Laura Story
“Stay close by My side,
Keep your eyes on Me,
Though this life is hard,
I will give you perfect peace,

In this time of trial,
Pain that noone sees,
Trust me when I say,
I will give you perfect peace,

Though I may not calm the storms around you,
You can hide in Me,

Burdens that you bear,
Offer no relief,
Let Me bear your load,
Cause I will give you perfect peace,

Stay close by My side,

Keep your eyes on Me,
And you will never be in need,
Though this life is hard,
Know that I will always give you perfect peace,

From the end of the earth I will cry to You, When my heart is overwhelmed; Lead me to the rock that is higher than I. Psalm 61:2 KJV
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
I would very much appreciate prayer re: my final chemo treatment Monday, October 10th.  Woooohooooooooo and PTL that that aspect of the treatment plan is almost behind me!!!!!!!  Honestly, the aftermath each time has gotten harder and harder because of the cumulative adverse effects from the drugs. We are praying that these are not permanent.  It is too early to tell but we are rooting for “temporary”.  I still have a long, hard road ahead of me that I need to walk with Him through one step at a time. I have radiation coming up soon, a year of IV Herceptin, and hormone blockers on the agenda.  Not fun, not fun 😉
I would be grateful for prayer that #1: He would be glorified and honored in my life.  After that, then my honest heart’s desire is that He would completely heal me of this deadly, aggressive cancer, repair the damage to the healthy cells that all the “Big Guns”  treatment entails, and remove the invisible tourniquet sensation on my arm from nerve damage and lymph node disruption from the mastectomy and lymph node dissection in May. To be truthful, this treatment plan is definately not “my cup of tea”.  However, to the best of my understanding it is how how God is leading me and so I am asking God to make me brave in Him and help me have a good attitude about the cancer and conventional treatment that  I hate  and teach me to rest and trust Him.   I am thankful that the doctors seem optomistic that this plan will be effective.  This protocol has helped many women before me and I would like to be (and am planning to be!)  a survivor too.  Sometimes though I feel like we are trying to put out a raging fire with a defective, leaking squirt gun loaded with acid that is hurting the rest of me as it tries to attack the cancer and then I remember David with his sling shot and stones–not impressive in themselves to take down Goliath…BUT GOD!  I am confident that NONE of the prayer requests I lay before Him are too hard for God and He can do ANYTHING and EVERYTHING.   God can do a miracle if He wants to and that’s what I am praying for.  I am Yours, Father, and I want what You want, whatever that is.
Please do keep me and my whole family in your prayers.  Thanks from the bottom of my heart.
The joy of the Lord is my strength!

Phil 4:8-God’s Rubbish Removal Service For My Mind

“Fix your thoughts on what is true and good and right.
Think about things that are pure and lovely,
And dwell on the fine, good things in others.
Think about all you can praise God for
And be glad about it.” Phil 4:8
“I call Phil 4:8 my ‘rubbish removal service.’  It’s the verse I use to dump the garbage from my mind and get rid of useless, rotting, noxious junk so I can replace it with things that are nourishing, fresh, and healthy.  A lot has been written on ‘positive thinking,’ but Paul scooped everybody 2000 years ago with Phil 4:8, which he wrote in prison, chained to a Roman guard, waiting to be executed.”
–Barbara Johnson

333. With God’s training I can use Phil 4:8 as my personal “rubbish removal service”–dumping all the garbage of my mind and exchanging it for whatever is true, whatever is worthy of reverence and is honorable and seemly, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely and lovable, whatever is kind and winsome and gracious, the things of virtue and excellence and worthy of praise. I will think on and weigh and take account of these things: I will fix my mind on them.
334. An all-day rain soaking my garden today and fun memories of splashing in puddles with my kids when they were younger.  Maybe we should do this again. 🙂
Some specific prayer requests I’d appreciate prayer for:
–On Monday Oct 10th my sister-in-law Kelley will be having a mastectomy for breast cancer.   May God work out all the details as only He can and give her grace and peace through it all.
— That same day is my last chemo.  Hooray to be finishing that chapter of my treatment! Please pray for His healing and strength for the long road still ahead of me and a resolution of the chemo damage.
Thanks for your prayers and encouragement!
Joyfully His,

4 Worms in Church

A minister decided that a visual demonstration would add emphasis to his Sunday sermon.

Four worms were placed into four separate jars.

The first worm was put into a container of alcohol.

The second worm was put into a container of cigarette smoke.

The third worm was put into a container of chocolate syrup.

The fourth worm was put into a container of good clean soil.

At the conclusion of the sermon, the Minister reported the following results:

The first worm in alcohol – Dead

The second worm in cigarette smoke – Dead

Third worm in chocolate syrup – Dead

Fourth worm in good clean soil – Alive .

So the Minister asked the congregation –

What did you learn from this demonstration?

Maxine was sitting in the back, quickly raised her hand and said,

‘As long as you drink, smoke, and eat chocolate, you won’t have worms!’

That pretty much ended the service.”  😉

The last few days I have been thinking some about how God uses pain and suffering.  I don’t believe He causes it but He allows it and sure does use it.  This sin-cursed world has things that make no sense, that hurt real bad, that “stink” when it comes right down to it.

– innocent babies are born with AIDS by Moms who took drugs

-bystanders get killed by drunk drivers

– spouses ditch marriages and leave their mate and kids devastated

-hurricanes, tornados, floods, and fires maim and extinguish lives and strip of all possessions

– drive-by shootings, rape, incest:  evil sometimes seems to prevail

– years ago my two year old nephew drowned.  I heard this song yesterday http://www.cmt.com/videos/kenny-chesney/62075/who-youd-be-today.jhtml and thought of dear little Sean as I prayed for my sister-in-law, his Mom, who also has breast cancer and is scheduled for a mastectomy on Monday

-missionaries diligently serving the Lord in remote jungles are martyred by guerrillas

-with each of my four miscarriages my heart felt like it had been run over by a truck

These are just a handful of terribly hard things–there are lots more. Each one of us goes through difficulties.  How can it be that any good can come out of bad things?  Somehow, in God’s economy He can take the worst, lousiest, stinkiest, rottennest, most un-fair, hunk-a-junk messes, and use them for our good and His glory and honor. The truth is, sometimes life is downright painful and hard and doesn’t make sense but God is ALWAYS up to something good in our lives, ALWAYS and no matter what.

God will never let me down.  This is a verse I am hanging my hat on:

Romans 8:28

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Lord, every single good gift comes from You…

331.  I am assured and know that God is working ALL things together for good to and for those who love Him and are called according to His design and purpose.(Romans 8:28) This verse is for me and I know it to be true.  God has something beautiful in mind for all He is allowing and orchestrating in my life.
332. I am alive and still have more time with my family.  By God’s grace I will not waste His gift of each day He gives me here.

A Merry Heart, Not Dried Up Bones

Proverbs 17:22 NKJ
A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones.

Proverbs 17:22 AMP

22A happy heart is good medicine and a cheerful mind works healing, but a broken spirit dries up the bones.

It was God who thought up laughter and smiles in the first place and He is the One who gives us those gifts. I believe that there is plentiful evidence that God Himself has an excellent sense of humor and He wants the same for us. He knew what good these would do for our souls, our minds, our bodies.

Father, this cancer stuff is really hard. I feel so sad, overwhelmed, and discouraged inside sometimes I hardly know what to do. Thank You Lord, for teaching me during this season of great trial to pro-actively cultivate a growing sense of humor and how You are giving me a down-deep joy wrapped up in Christ that has nothing to do with circumstance and emotion and everything to do with You!  Out with “a broken spirit and dry bones”, in with a genuinely happy heart, a healthy, cheerful mind, welcoming Your healing touch.

Praising Him and rejoicing in Him with my whole heart,

“Check your shampoo bottle label.   I don’t know WHY I didn’t figure this out sooner. It’s the shampoo I use in the shower!  When I wash my hair, the shampoo runs down my whole body and (duh!) printed very clearly on the shampoo label is this warning…   FOR EXTRA VOLUME AND BODY!   NO wonder I have been gaining weight!  Well!  I have gotten rid of that shampoo and I am going to start using Dawn dish soap instead. Their label reads,  DISSOLVES FAT THAT IS OTHERWISE DIFFICULT TO REMOVE.  Problem Solved! If I don’t answer the phone …I’ll be in the shower!”

 Prayer for 2011

“Dear God:

For 2011, I’d like to ask You for a fat bank account and a slim body.
Please do not mix up the two like you did last year.

"I read that a child laughs 400 times a day on the average, while an adult laughs
15 times each day . . . which is puzzling since laughter feels so good and is so
for us!

You may know the benefits of laughter on the mind and spirit, but are you aware
how much a good laugh can help you physically? Norman Cousins used to say that
laughter is so beneficial for your body that it is like ‘inner jogging’.

Mayo Clinic (Mayo Clinic Health Letter, March 1993) reports that laughter aids
breathing by disrupting your normal respiration pattern and increasing your
rate. It can even help clear mucus from your lungs.

Laughter is also good for your heart. It increases circulation and improves the
of oxygen and nutrients to tissues throughout your body.

A good laugh helps your immune system fight off colds, flu and sinus problems by

increasing the concentration of immunoglobulin A in your saliva. And it may
control pain by raising the levels of certain brain chemicals (endorphins).

Furthermore, it is a natural stress reliever. Have you ever laughed so hard
that you
doubled over, fell off your chair, spit out your food or wet your pants? You
maintain muscle tension when you are laughing!

The good news is that you are allowed more than 15 laughs a day! Go ahead and
double the dose and make it 30 times today. (You may begin to notice immediate
improvement in your relationships!) Then double it again! You are bound to
feel better,
you will cope with problems more effectively and people will enjoy being around

Laughter: it's just good medicine!"

329. Thank You Lord for a wonderful visit with my Mom and two of my sisters.
They went home to Tucson on Wednesday and Thursday. What a blessing for them to come!
