“God Has Hung His Diploma in the Universe and Accomplishments in Scripture””

 I was working recently in London — what a thrill, yeah. But I wasn’t used to their money, though, ’cause I bought this really decadent box of chocolates. The cashier said, “That’ll be 10 pounds.” I’m like, “Rub it in, why don’t you?”
—Carol Leifer

One of the things I did when I was doctor hunting was to look at credentials and experience: like how long surgeons had been exclusively doing breast surgery, was breast cancer specifically their oncology specialty, etc.  Of particular interest to me were the opinions of others who had already seen them as patients.  I also was happy to find doctors who were willing to monitor me while I tried the natural medicine route and be there for me as needed.    I REALLY was hoping that God was going to do the surgery Himself and completely heal me without those doctors (how I wish He had!), but God is in control and I am confident He knows what’s best for me.

In the book Fearless that I am reading, Max Lucado talked about how anxious he felt when he was dealing with a serious health issue and researching his diagnosis and options.  From that experience, he invites the reader to imagine being “in God’s office” and to take a look at and focus on HIS credentials.

 “God has hung his diplomas in the universe. Rainbows, sunsets, horizons, and star sequined skies. He has recorded his accomplishments in Scripture. We’re not talking six thousand hours of flight time. His resume includes Red Sea openings. Lions’ mouths closings. Goliath topplings. Lazarus raisings. Storm stillings and strollings. “(Max Lucado)

“But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is they faithfulness. ‘The LORD is my portion,’ says my soul, ‘therefore I will hope in him'” (Lamentations 3:21-24 RSV)

I have been through the valley of weeping,

The valley of sorrow and pain;

But the “God of all comfort” was with me,

At hand to uphold and sustain.

As the earth needs the clouds and sunshine,

Our souls need both sorrow and joy;

So He places us oft in the furnace,

The dross from the gold to destroy.

When he leads through some valley of trouble,

His omnipotent hand we trace;

For the trials and sorrows He sends us,

Are part of His lessons in grace.

Oft we run from the purging and pruning,

Forgetting the Gardener knows

That the deeper the cutting and trimming,

The richer the cluster that grows.

Well He knows that affliction is needed;

He has a wise purpose in view,

And in the dark valley He whispers,

“Soon you’ll understand what I do.”

As we travel through life’s shadowed valley,

Fresh springs of His love ever rise;
And we learn that our sorrows and losses,

Are blessings just sent in disguise.

So we’ll follow wherever He leads us,

Let the path be dreary or bright;

For we’ve proved that our God can give comfort;
Our God can give songs in the night.

(Streams in the Desert)

 Lord, every single good gift comes from You…

396. I only need to look in the Bible and the world around me to see that “God has hung his diplomas in the universe. “(Max Lucado)  I am in excellent Hands!

P.S. I go to the Cancer Center today to receive my every- 21 -day-for- a -year  IV Herceptin.  On Wednesday there is more prep for the treatment plan for radiation to either start this week or next.  I would appreciate continued prayer for His protection during all these treatments, His complete healing of the cancer as well as elimination of the neuropathy from the chemo, and for God to restore my left arm.  Thank you!

  1. Dear Paula,
    I lifted you up today, to the One who loves so deeply, the One who is sovereign and good and Holy. What a privilege it is. He hears our prayers for healing and well being. He hears our cries when we are alone and He cares. He is our High Priest and is interceding on our behalf. Thank you for your faithfulness Lord.

  2. Thank you for these good thoughts in todays blog. I just mailed you Joni’s next book “A Place of Healing” and the post office said you should receive it Saturday. I have enjoyed ‘reading’ Joni’s books on my Kindle by audio. I hope they’ll be a blessing to you as well. With love and prayers…Sonia

  3. Your blogs are very inspiring, Paula. I am reading Pastor John Hagee’s “The Seven Secrets” for the second time and he puts great emphasis on our attitudes……which he defines in one of several ways as “your best friend or your worse enemy…..the advance man of your true self” and “determines the quality of your relationships”…..with husband, wife, children .employer, friends and God. You have chosen a great attitude….keep it up…..we love you and so does Jesus.

  5. Hi Paula & John,
    Good Writing. I like the idea of His diploma hanging in the sky. How Magnificent. Just got out of the hospital the second time in two weeks for fever and infection. In a lot of pain now but do not know why. No one has found the answer. It hurts to move. Cloudy vision so it is hard to read. I am praying for you. Please keep me in your prayers as well. Kathy

  6. Father, we pray in the name of Jesus for Kathy. We pray that You will give the doctors Your wisdom and guidance in understanding the source of her pain and to treat it. We pray for complete healing of the cancer, the infection, fever, the blurry vision, anything else that needs healing. Please give her your grace and strength and draw her in closer and closer to Your wonderful Self. Please meet hers and her family’s deepest needs. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

    Will keep praying for ya, Kathy.
